Kuching Waterfront
The
Kuching Waterfront is probably one of the finest examples of urban regeneration
in Asia. It began as an attempt to return Kuching's dilapidated riverbank -
dotted with mouldering warehouses and ramshackle wharves - to its rightful
owners, the people of Kuching. Thanks to major land reclamation works and
extensive restoration, the Kuching Waterfront is nowadays a 900-metre long
esplanade, beautifully landscaped and dotted with historic buildings, including
the Square Tower, the Sarawak Steamship Building and the Chinese History Museum.
The Kuching Waterfront is home to a number of restaurants and snack food outlets, and strollers are frequently entertained by free performances in the restored amphitheatre or the Chinese pavilion. During the daytime, the Waterfront offers excellent views of the Istana and Fort Margherita, and is the place to catchsampans to the kampungs across the river. In the evening the Waterfront really comes alive; the sunsets over Mount Serapi can be truly spectacular, and the crowds of people - eating, drinking, meeting friends or just going for a walk - give the visitor the impression that the whole of Kuching is assembled here.
